Hello, I’m James, the local idiot. For those that haven’t yet purged me from their memory, I’m the guy who suggested Hush should be the next villain for Batman and that Iron Man should be killed. Yes, I’m that guy. Is it possible for me to embarrass myself again? Read on to see how a moron deliberately antagonises an audience for virtual internet points. Yeah, I said it.

That title is juicy!

I’m clearly attacking the DC fanboys. I’ve been paid for by Marvel to kick in the teeth of DC. With the immense power that I possess in the internet world, DC will collapse after this post has made its rounds! HAHAHAAH!

Evil plan aside; hear me out:

Does anybody else find it a bit off that all three of the DCEU films (DC Extended Universe aka film-verse, stupid I know) have received major criticism from critics (shock) and seemingly loved by many fans?

This got me thinking. What if this isn’t some unfortunate series of events. What if Zack and the team behind DC are doing this on purpose.


Trailers Are More Important Than Ever

A bit of ground work is needed first, however.

Over the years, trailers have undergone many changes. Moving away from trailers that tease an audience, they opt for the “let’s show them the whole film in 3 minutes” approach. Some films take this to the extreme by revealing major plot twists (looking at you Terminator: Genisys).

We all know this, we all moan about it and are happily surprised at a good teaser trailer (well done Star Wars: Episode VII).

The reasoning behind the change in trailers I believe is the ever increasing competition between the movie studios. Look at 2018’s release schedule for instant;

Now, that list is HUGE, with many of films there that we’re all excited to watch. How can studios convince you, with so much competition, to part with your cash and head down the cinema to see their film and not another great film released the same week?


Suicide Squad, in my opinion, had some of the best trailers going. They were fun and exciting and lead me to believe I was getting a totally different film. *Cough* The Joker *Cough*

And I think, part of the film’s box office success, was due to the excellent trailers. It may also explain the massive drop-off the following week. With an American box office, opening week of $179m to a 65% drop off to $62m and then another 53% drop off in its third week to $29m.

Still, some outstanding results. But, is this film perfecting a strategy of getting the most tickets sold in its first week.


Controversy Sells

The age old saying that no press is bad press has a lot of truth to it.

What if Batman V Superman left audiences feeling ‘meh’ about it? Would countless movie sites and the general media publicise “New DC Film Is Okay”? I doubt it.

Marvel’s selling technique is to make great films that can also please fans (I promise I’m not a Marvel fanboy). For DC to compete, they can’t simply do the same. They can’t have the same dynamics that allow the Marvel films to work, they need to stand out on their own. Releasing a film that looks as though it has the potential to be good gets bums on seats. Having the film be a mix-match of good parts and bad parts leaves audiences split. Thus creating controversy.

Film fans can discuss the merits and the confusing moments of Batman V Superman for decades to come. All this discussion only creates buzz and those suffering from FOMO (fear of missing out) simply have to watch the DC films.


Cuts Create Controversy

The reports on the latest DC film, Suicide Squad, have us believe that the studio at Warner Bros made two edits of David Ayer’s film. One cut made by the same team that had been making their trailers with a more bouncy and funny feel to it and another cut being the original darker Ayer version.

Now, WB had two paths they could take. Plan A would be to decide on just one version of the film and not to jeopardise the entire film by smooshing the two cuts together. Plan B would be to cut and chop between the two cuts to get a barely linear storyline. WB went with plan B.

This, I feel, was done deliberately. Now people can enjoy some parts and hate the others. Those who are more positive about DC films have scenes they can cling to as proof the film was good. Those who were going to hate on the film anyway, they also get proof. This enables endless flame wars online about whether the film was good or not.

Controversy Creates Cash

After watching Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War the general consensus was that the film was good, to some others it was great. However, no one said “Can you re-do that film again please?” or “Can we get the full unedited version?”. There were no suggestions for spin-offs or petitions to take down a major movie review aggregator. It was a peaceful “I liked it, this may have been better”.

Don’t get me wrong Civil War made tonnes of money and making good films is a strategy that works for Marvel. It’s also a strategy that has worked for DC in the past also, look at the Nolan Batman trilogy.

However, directly competing with the powerhouse of Disney on their playing field, that of story-telling, may prove to be costly for the DC guys.

I believe they’ve opted to play a different game, one which creates a lot more headlines.


If You Can’t Beat ‘Em

Disney is attempting to make the brand of Marvel the top-brass for comic-book films. They’ve even recently changed the titles to separate themselves from the Fox and Sony produced Marvel films.

Once upon a time DC was on top, with the Nolan films, many fans still say to this day that The Dark Knight is the best comic-book movie of all time. It’s difficult to argue against that, however, today’s DC films are of a different flavour.

A different technique needed to be attempted: take a popular franchise, get a promising director, cut the finished product up, release, wait for controversy, check your bank account.


You Can Always Reboot

Push comes to shove, the DC-verse can always reboot. Simple as that. This weird experiment with their DC films will hopefully be a strong learning exercise for the execs at WB so that when the inevitable reboot happens they can attack it better.

Alternatively, they may have learned the wrong lessons and now know that a controversial movie makes more than a good movie.
